At present there is no legislative protection for Council
Officers employed to carry out law enforcement functions on behalf
of Local Government Councils. Appropriate legislation has been
identified that could provide suitable deterrents and adequate
penalties in the event of assaults on staff, while they are
exercising their delegated authorities.
The purpose of this project was to develop a
submission to the Attorney General, Minister for Justice and
the Minister for Local Government for consideration of the
necessary legislative amendment.
The submission was developed and forwarded to the State
Government in October 2008.
