Green Web was developed from 1997 as a network of green
"corridors" connecting the Sydney area. SSROC continues to have
responsibility for the Green Web Sydney website, but it depends
heavily on the maintenance of mapping data which was originally
provided by the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority
(SMCMA) and by the other ROCs - collectively 41 local government
authorities. Two reviews of Green Web Sydney have recommended that
a single entity shoud have responsibility for its continuing
management, however SMCMA's status is unclear as its own Action
Plan and funding have not yet been finalised. Of the SSROC members,
only Sutherland Council continues with the initiative.
Green Web Sydney has the potential to be a valuable resource for
biodiversity. The original objectives are still valid. However as
its scope is much broader than just Southern Sydney, its
leadershiip should be by an organisation capable of driving its
maintenance and enhancement on a broad geographical basis.
This project is to assess the feasibility of implementing the
findings of the Green Web Review by establishing suitable
leadership and a framework for management into the future.
