There are now many highly cost-effective and sustainable
alternatives, and the expiry of most SSROC members' waste disposal
contracts in 2010 provides an opportunity to improve practices
to:
- meet the regional aim of resource stewardship
- exceed the State diversion target of 66%
- reduce greenhouse emissions
- minimise environmental impacts of waste disposal while
maximising public health and amenity benefits
- achieve good value for money by creating a competitive market
for these services.
This project aims to achieve significant financial,
environmental and social benefits by going to the market for
provision of services.
It also offers the opportunity for service providers to bring
innovative waste treatment practices to the region, and possibly
sufficient reliable waste volume to create the conditions for new
capital investment.
